Birds are incredible friends, and when properly cared for, can live long & healthy lives. Whether you're feeding parakeets and budgies, or wild birds outside, we have the knowledge and experience to help guide you to the perfect food. All bird's dietary needs are different, and what works best for some will not provide adequate nutrition for others. Therefore, we proudly provide the Mandeville area with the best food for your feathered friends, improving their health and wellness and extending their lives.
Wild bird vs pet bird food:
Wild bird food, depending on where you live, is usually a blend of different types of seeds, including thistle, sunflower, safflower, millet, and sorghum. Additionally, numerous wild bird feeds consist of peanuts and corn, which are preferred by certain species like cardinals and blue jays. Wild bird food varies in order to attract as many different species as possible. So while it meets their calorie requirements, it's not dialed-in nutritionally like domestic bird food.
Domestic bird food is generally a blend of similar seeds, with nutritionally dense pellets included. Conures, doves, and pigeons love millet, as do budgies and parakeets. They also enjoy safflower and sunflower seeds when they're hulled, though parrots and hookbills will choose bigger seed types.
Food for pets will have prebiotic fiber and probiotic ingredients included, as well as a selection of other all-natural seeds and fruits. These strengthen the immune and digestive function of your birds, and more closely imitate their natural diet, which wouldn't usually contain a few types of seeds.
Ensuring appropriate nutrition:
Birds need prebiotics and probiotics to keep their digestive functions working efficiently. Omega-3 fatty acids from nuts and seeds provide fat for their brains and nerves, and improves the gloss and shine of their feathers, while the numerous vitamins and micronutrients keep them healthy overall. Additionally, as your bird ages, you will want to seek advice from a professional on what type of food you should be feeding them. Younger birds have different dietary needs than older birds, and altering their food requires care and needs to be done slowly, as birds can have picky digestive systems. Slowly incorporate the new food into your bird's dish, replacing more of the old seed with the new food daily to ensure appropriate adherence to the new diet.
At Adventure Pets, we concentrate on ensuring your bird is provided with the best nutrition for their specific needs. Whether you're feeding wild birds in your backyard, or a parakeet in your home, our friendly, experienced staff has your back. Great place and selection of food for all your pets. Friendly and caring staff...plus its fun to visit all the happy creatures that they have in store.
Just went in to look at fish, very nice, clean facility, fury and scaled animals looked healthy and happy! Employees were very attentive!
LOVE Adventure Pets. Friendly, knowledgeable staff that are always happy to help. Great selection and pretty good prices for not being a big box store. I love shopping here, and even bring kids I babysit just to break up the day. They love feeding the koi fish and picking out treats for their dogs!! Support local!!
With average prices but an excellent staff I highly recommend going to the store over PetSmart or Petco. They have specialty foods for dogs and cats as well as a plethora of toys. The staff is knowledgeable and extremely nice, and if you ask nicely they might even let you feed their beautiful fish. One thing I want to commend them on is how amazing they take care of their animals. You don't see dead fish floating in any of the tanks nor do the reptiles look unhappy. Often when you go to chain stores like PetSmart or Petco there are animals that are dead inside of their tanks and the tanks and enclosures are very dirty; this is not the case at Adventure Pets. Also the stuff is very attentive and can answer multiple questions on a variety of their products. Both the Covington location and the Mandeville location are absolutely excellent, however if you're looking for a pet sort of take the kiddos to to see the animals that I recommend going to the Mandeville one. Also they accept donations to rescues so if you're just going to visit the animals, and not really shopping, I highly recommend making a small donation. While it's not required, the way they take care of their animals certainly will make you want to do so. I honestly wish that all stores were run like Adventure pets because it is a really great place.
